Types Of Drooping Eyelids: Dermatochalasis And Ptosis

 -

Old age comes with defects. Eventually we are all caught up by gravity. One gets pendent breasts , the other loosens the skin around the eyelids. But did you know that there are different causes of drooping eyelids? In this article you can read about the difference between dermatochalasis and ptosis.

What are droopy eyelids?

In the case of drooping eyelids, excess skin on the lower or upper eyelids is hanging over the eyelid margin. Especially the upper eyelids often hang. You sometimes see less well with hanging eyelids or you have a tired look.

We distinguish two types of drooping eyelids. The medical terms for this are dermatochalasis and ptosis. Although both species lead to relatively similar complaints, they have different causes.

Causes ptosis

Ptosis occurs when the eye muscles, optic nerves or eye tendons no longer function properly. An example of this is Ptosis caused by a weakening in the eye muscle that raises the upper eyelid (the levator muscle). Correction of ptosis is done by shortening the levator muscle. Sometimes, however, it is hardly present anymore and the result of the intervention is poorly predictable.

Causes of ptosis are for example:

Old age
Muscle diseases
Horner’s syndrome
Scar after injury

Causes dermatochalasis

In general, the cause of dermatochalasis is a weakening of the skin. The eyelid skin is very thin and therefore sensitive to stretching and gravity. The most common causes of dermatochalasis are:

Old age
Reduced elasticity of the eyelid skin

Treatment of ptosis or dermatochalasis

Despite the different causes of ptosis and dermatochalasis, eyelid surgery is actually the only possible treatment. With an eyelid correction, the excess skin is removed and the eye muscle is possibly re-attached. In some cases, the fat pockets around the eye are also removed.

A treatment is sometimes necessary for severely reduced vision or fatigue due to drooping eyelids. You can also opt for an eyelid correction for cosmetic reasons.

Plastic surgery

But that does not completely shut down the shore. There is not much left then to accept your bags, and to know that incredibly many people have them. If you can not see them, then plastic surgery could be a last resort. Velthuis: ‘A small incision is made just under the lashes . This gives access to the fat pocket, from which the fat can be removed. If the shore consists of excess skin, it will be removed.

Restylane

A circle receives an opposite treatment: ‘Because something is missing here, which makes the skin translucent, we inject Restylane into these places. None of these treatments are reimbursed. Surgical removal of the fat gives a permanent improvement. Excess skin gradually increases with age. A remedy like Restylane will last for about 1- 1½ years. ‘
